    Hands, posture and finger numbers

    Nobody wants to spend time on this. It is worth ten minutes anyway, and here is the selfish reason why.

    Nobody wants to spend time on posture. It feels like the boring part before the playing starts.

    It is worth ten minutes anyway, for one selfish reason: bad hand position does not slow you down at first, it slows you down in about four months, at exactly the point where things were starting to get interesting. Fixing it then means unlearning something. Getting it roughly right now costs almost nothing.

    This is step two of the piano path. Step one was finding your way around the keyboard.

    Finger numbers

    Piano music writes little numbers above or below the notes. They are not note names and they are not fingerings you can ignore — they tell you which finger to use.

    Both thumbs are 1. The numbering runs outward from the thumb on each hand, so it mirrors across the middle. It is not left-to-right — that catches almost everyone once.

    Thumb is 1, index 2, middle 3, ring 4, little finger 5. On both hands. The numbering starts at the thumb and counts outward, which means it mirrors: your two number-fives are the two fingers furthest apart.

    Almost everyone assumes at least once that the left hand counts the other way. It does not.

    Why the numbers are there at all

    Because most passages have exactly one fingering that works, and several that get you stuck. Follow the printed fingering and your hand ends up in position for the next few notes. Ignore it and you will find yourself needing a sixth finger.

    Editors put real thought into those numbers. Early on, treat them as instructions rather than suggestions.

    Sitting

    Sit at the middle of the keyboard, far enough back that your elbows are slightly in front of your body rather than pinned at your sides. Elbows roughly level with the keys, or a touch above.

    If your bench is too low your wrists drop below the keys, which is the single most common problem and the cause of most beginner hand pain. Too low is far more common than too high. A cushion is a completely legitimate fix.

    The shape of the hand

    Curve your fingers. The classic instruction is to imagine holding a tennis ball, or to let your arm hang loose at your side and notice the shape your hand naturally falls into — that is very close to correct.

    Imagine holding a tennis ball. That is roughly the shape. A dropped wrist forces you to push each key with your whole arm, which is slow and eventually painful.

    Play with the fingertips, not the flat pads. Keep the wrist level with the forearm, neither dropped nor arched. The knuckles stay up rather than collapsing inward.

    What it should feel like

    Loose. Almost lazy. If your forearm is tense between notes, something is being held that does not need to be held.

    The test: play five notes, then stop and notice your shoulders. If they have crept upward, reset. Tension travels, and it always starts somewhere other than where it hurts.

    Pain is information

    Fingertips feeling tired after a long session is normal, especially on weighted keys.

    Pain in the wrist, forearm or thumb joint is not. That is technique, and it does not improve with practice — it gets worse, because you are repeating the thing causing it. If a position hurts, stop and change it rather than pushing through.

    This is the one area where the usual advice about persistence is actively wrong.

    Five minutes that will do it

    Put your right thumb on middle C and let the next four fingers fall on D, E, F and G. One finger per key, no stretching, no moving the hand.

    Play 1-2-3-4-5 up, then 5-4-3-2-1 down, slowly, saying the finger numbers out loud. Then the same with the left hand, thumb on middle C going down: C, B, A, G, F.

    Watch your wrist rather than your fingers while you do it. That is the whole exercise, and it is the position almost all beginner music starts from.

    How many keys does a piano have?

    Eighty-eight, and it does not matter. What matters is the pattern of black keys that tells you where you are.

    An 88-key piano looks like 88 things to learn. It is not. It is twelve things, repeated seven times, and one visual landmark that tells you where you are.

    This is step one of the piano path. It assumes nothing at all — not reading music, not having touched a keyboard before.

    How many keys does a piano have?

    A full-size piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. That has been the standard since the late nineteenth century, when manufacturers settled on a range wide enough for everything composers were writing.

    You almost certainly do not need all of them. Smaller keyboards cut from the ends rather than the middle, so a 61-key instrument still has the entire range you will play in for a very long time.

    The pattern

    If you are choosing an instrument, weighted keys matter far more than key count. Weighted keys build the finger strength that transfers to a real piano; an unweighted 88-key keyboard teaches your hands the wrong thing.

    The pattern that makes it navigable

    Look at the black keys. They are not evenly spread — they come in a group of two, then a group of three, then two, then three, all the way up the instrument. That grouping never varies and never breaks.

    That is the only landmark you need.

    Two, three, two, three — forever. C is always the white key immediately left of a group of two. Find one group of two anywhere on the instrument and you have found C, without counting from anything.

    Finding C

    C is the white key immediately to the left of any group of two black keys. There is no exception anywhere on any piano ever made.

    Go and find one now. Then find another. Then a third. Within about thirty seconds you will stop counting and start seeing them, and that is genuinely the hardest visual skill in early piano out of the way.

    Everything else follows

    Once you have C, the white keys run in alphabetical order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B — and then back to C. Seven letters, then it restarts.

    The letters stop at G because the alphabet was never the point. Music uses seven note names before the pattern repeats, so it borrows the first seven letters and starts again. A note called C and the next C up are the same note in a different register, which is why they share a name.

    What about the black keys?

    Each black key sits between two white ones, and it takes its name from whichever neighbour you approach it from. The black key between C and D is C sharp if you are moving up, and D flat if you are moving down.

    Same key. Same sound. Two names, depending on where you came from. That sounds like a needless complication and it becomes useful much later, when key signatures decide which name a piece uses throughout.

    Middle C

    Middle C is the C nearest the centre of the instrument — usually right around the brand name on an acoustic piano. It is the reference point almost all beginner music is written around, and the note where the two staves of piano notation meet.

    You do not need to do anything with it yet. Just know which one it is.

    Before you move on

    Two things, and they take about five minutes total.

    Find every C on your instrument, top to bottom, without counting. Then play C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C going up with your right hand, saying the letters out loud as you go. Saying them out loud feels silly and it is the fastest way to make the names stick.

    How to read sheet music from zero

    Reading music is taught like a second language. It is closer to reading a graph — the page tells you which note, and when.

    Reading music is often taught as if it were a second language, which makes it sound like a years-long project. It is closer to reading a graph. The page tells you two things: which note to play, and when to play it. That is the entire system.

    This is step three of the piano path, and step one of the music theory path. Everything else on this site assumes you can find a note on the page.

    The staff is a picture of pitch

    Five lines, four spaces. Higher on the page means higher in pitch. Lower means lower. A note sitting on the bottom line is lower than one sitting on the top line, and that relationship holds everywhere, always.

    Notes occupy either a line or a space, and they alternate. Line, space, line, space, going up. Move a note up by one position and you have moved up one letter name.

    The clef tells you where to start counting

    The treble clef curls around the second line from the bottom and marks it as G. The bass clef has two dots either side of the fourth line and marks it as F.

    That is all a clef does. It anchors one line to one note name, and every other note follows from the alternating pattern. Piano music uses both because two hands cover more range than one staff can show.

    Note shape tells you duration

    A hollow oval with no stem lasts four beats. A hollow oval with a stem lasts two. Fill the oval in and it lasts one. Add a flag and it lasts half a beat.

    Each step halves the previous value. Once you notice that, you are not memorising a list, you are counting in halves.

    How to actually practise this

    Do not try to learn all the note names at once. Learn one anchor per staff — middle C is the usual choice — and count up or down from it. Slow, deliberate counting beats flashcards early on, because you are learning the relationships rather than isolated facts.

    Recognition speed comes later and it comes from volume. Read something easy every day rather than something hard once a week.
