What type of music would you like to play?
When you decide to learn how to play an instrument, the first thing you think about is playing your favorite song from your favorite musician/artist. This probably is the inspiration you got to start the journey of playing an instrument.
For example, do you see yourself rocking to Van Halen, jazzing out to Herbie Hancock, filling a recital playing Mozart, or singing out to your favorite pop song from Rihanna? This is a particularly important decision because even though the instrument may be the same, the difficulty to play each genre is not.
From my experience, Pop and Rock songs are great to start as a beginner since they usually work around a 4 or 5 chord progression.
Are you interested in music theory or just learning the skills?
I know many people that their focus is just to play a song and get the skills to execute it, but have cero interest in learning the theory behind it. And don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad thing, but it’s important to know this so you invest your time wisely. Probably when you get better you would like to learn more music theory so you can improvise, compose your own music, or what I like the most, trying to rearrange a pop song with jazz chords or vice versa.
